Recovery Acres Edmonton is a thirty-four bed residential treatment centre for men desiring recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Recovery is a process which may begin in a detoxification centre, a hospital, or a treatment centre. A premature return to the original environment often leads to relapse. An individual in early stages of recovery suffers from many physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional problems, such as irritability and inability to handle everyday situations. The alcoholic/drug addict needs additional time in a therapeutic environment, surrounded by those who understand the nature of the illness, and others who are in recovery.

History

Half-way Recovery Acres Edmonton is an outgrowth of Belmont Hostel (a half-way house) which was started in 1955 as a place for men released from prison who had a desire to remain sober. On October 10, 1973, the present society was incorporated under the Societies Act of Alberta, sponsored by the Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission (AADAC) and moved from downtown Edmonton. The Society moved to its present location in October 1979.
